BLUE ENVELOPE PROGRAM

THE BLUE ENVELOPE PROGRAM

A Resource for Drivers with Autism

The Blue Envelope Program is a free program in New York State.
It is run by the New York State Sheriffs’ Association.

What is the goal?
This program helps police officers understand when a driver has autism. It shows them how to communicate in a calmer and clearer way.
It also helps drivers with autism feel less nervous and be prepared during a traffic stop.

How does it work?
Drivers with autism can get a Blue Envelope from local sheriff’s offices or partner groups.
Inside the envelope, the driver should keep:

  • Driver’s license
  • Vehicle registration
  • Contact card (with helpful information)

The Blue Envelope should be kept in a place that is easy to see and reach inside the car.
