ACCESS TO COMMUNICATION
Communication access ensures that a person receives information in ways they can understand: Using plain and preferred language, visuals, assistive technology, interpreters, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), etc. It’s not just about understanding words. It is about making sure you have the information you need to make informed decisions about your life.
You are the decision maker in your own life. Part of that means providing informed consent and signing your own Life Plan, when able. Supported Decision-Making allows those with IDD to make their own choices with the support of those they trust.
When you sign your own Life Plan you are:
Making a decision about your goals, needs, services, preferences, and more.
Building a sense of ownership over your life and your Life Plan.
Exercising your right to choose.
You also have the right to request that your Life Plan and other documents be translated into your preferred language. If this is something you need, please talk to your Care Manager/Care Coordinator.
